Urban Ministries of Durham salutes eleven graduates for successful completion of the Hope (for men) and Believe (for women) substance abuse recovery programs, including six months of drug-free living. Today's keynote speaker, Professor Chuck Campbell of the Duke University Divinity School, challenged the graduates to go forth with strength and resolve and to set an example for others that may be struggling with addiction.
The Hope-Believe Recovery Program is an intensive multi-tiered substance abuse recovery program for adult homeless men and women who suffer from addiction illness. The goal of the program is to provide recovery in a supportive and structured environment so that participants are empowered to manage their illness, maintain sobriety, improve health and wellness and move toward self-sufficiency.
Modeled after a 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program, the Hope-Believe Program incorporates education about the illness, role modeling, peer review and accountability as well as a system of rewards to encourage maintaining sobriety.
“The Hope-Believe Recovery Program is a true life-saving program for men and women who are struggling,” said UMD Executive Director Patrice Nelson. “Our graduates committed to the program in the beginning and are now moving forward and committing to staying sober and getting their lives back on track.”
