Thanks for supporting Empty Bowls '10

It may have been cold outside, but things definitely heated up in the Durham Armory on Friday, March 5th, for the 4th Annual Empty Bowls benefit for the Community Café presented by MindWorks Multimedia.

Soup was flowing and bowls were flying, not literally, of course, but past attendees know that it is best to have a strategy: get in early to get your pick of that beautiful pottery. Ticket sales were very strong this year. Over 90% were sold in advance, resulting in an early sell-out at the door.

Participating restaurants Blu Seafood & Bar, Nana's, Papa Mojo's Roadhouse, Revolution, Rue Cler, Watts Grocery, Whole Foods, and UMD's own Community Cafe showcased their tastiest soup creations for the enjoyment of the crowd, but Revolution's Chicken Masa Soup edged out each of them by winning both the Judge's and People's Choice Awards for Best Soup.

Many of the "souper bowlers" in attendance Friday night commented that both the soup and the pottery were better than ever before. We were delighted to see the community come together in support of Empty Bowls and efforts to help the Cafe serve 500-600 meals a day. While the final numbers are being tabulated, we are optimistic about matching, and maybe even surpassing the $25,000 in funds raised last year. In a down economy, this demonstrates the true heart and compassion of the folks in Durham and surrounding areas of Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough.

We sincerely thank everyone that attended and for the consideration and understanding of those we were unable to accommodate.

We extend a special thanks to Mayor Bill Bell, Emcee, and to our panel of judges:

Summer Bicknell - Owner, Locopops

Ted Domville - Co-owner & Manager, Local Yogurt

Henry M. "Mickey" Michaux - NC House of Representatives

Tisha Powell - Anchor, ABC11 Eyewitness News

The following financial and in-kind sponsors made it possible for 100% of ticket sales to directly benefit the Community Cafe. Thank You!
