Going Home: Moving Forward One Family at a Time

News

UMD is delighted to announce that 23 former shelter residents now have a place to call home, thanks to combined efforts with agency partner, Housing for New Hope. Yes, that's 23 formerly homeless persons now living in their own homes! And that's just for the month of May!

In fact, the number of people moving from the shelter to permanent housing has picked up steadily since January 2010, the official inception of a collaborative partnership with Housing for New Hope, UMD's Journey Case Management Program, and the Department of Social Services. Read more about this successful collaboration in The Triangle Tribune.

To get to this point, the residents had to work hard to find employment resources and to address a myriad of obstacles that led them to become homeless. We hope you will join us in celebrating important milestone!

However, their journey does not end here. For these families, it's just the beginning. A new place to call home. A new start. And many have very little to start over with.

That's where you can make a difference. Furnishings and other basic necessities are greatly needed. We invite you to be a part of this community-wide effort by helping families with the basic essentials as they get established in their new residences.

Listed below are the families that will be moving soon, along with things they need the most now:

The "JJ" Family - parents with 1 child
2 dressers, cooking utensils, pots & pans, sheets, towels, comforters, TV

The "MD" Family - single dad with 3 children
Bed for dad, 3 beds for children, computer, TV

The "LP" Family - parents with 5 children
3 dressers

The "TO" Family - single mom with 2 children
Bed for 1 child & mom, kitchen table & chairs, pots & pans, dishes, silverware, couch, towels & washcloths, sheets, comforters

The "MO" Family - single mom with 3 children
Beds for 2 children, 3 dressers

The "TA" Family - single mom with 3 children
Beds for 2 children, pots & pans

The "S" Family - single mom with a baby
Washer & dryer, dresser, kitchen table & chairs, kitchen utensils, cookware, dishes & cups, silverware, dish towels, bath towels & washcloths, full size sheets & comforter, crib sheet set, lamps, stroller, walker, toaster

These basic items along with any additional support and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated. If you can provide any of these items, please email Joi Stepney with Housing for New Hope or call (919) 489-6282. If you are in a position to deliver the items or to provide volunteer assistance in this regard, that would be great, but if not, please contact Joi anyway.

We're excited for all of these families and individuals moving forward in their journey, and UMD, Housing for New Hope, and various community partners will continue to provide support in the coming months during the transition.

In the near future, more individuals and families will be moving out of the shelter, and it is our hope to build a supply of items as well as a network of volunteers to help get them established in their new surroundings. Read more about ways to help in The Durham News.

If you or a group are interested in more information on how to get involved in after care support or ongoing efforts of support through a Circle of Support network, please email UMD's Director of Programs, Peter Donlon or call (919) 682-0538 ext. 23.

Finally, financial gifts are always welcome. You may donate online specifically for this cause by indicating "Families Moving" in the designation field.

Working together, we can truly accomplish great things. Thank you for Sharing the Journey!

Sincerely,

Patrice
