Who We Are
Urban Ministries of Durham is a private 501(c) 3 non-profit organization governed by a 17-member Board of Directors with 26 staff members and over 4,000 volunteers.
Unlike our name suggests, Urban Ministries of Durham is not a church-based missionary organization. While the organization was developed and is partially supported by a diverse constituency of faith communities, we welcome guests regardless of their beliefs. We are non-proselytizing, and clients are never turned away due to their religious affiliation or non-preference.
UMD distinguishes itself from other organizations that care for Durham's homeless and indigent population by serving as a comprehensive service provider of food, shelter, clothing and supportive services for over 7,600 men, women and children annually. We offer an inclusive acceptance policy, welcoming clients with mental illnesses, active addictions and those seeking outside employment. We do not require a minimum time commitment to the agency.
Guests are not required to participate in religious programming, but we do offer spiritual support, and a chaplain is available to meet with clients for spiritual counseling on a voluntary basis.
