Community Cafe

UMD’s Community Café is open to anyone in need of a meal. We serve three meals a day, every day.

Enjoy a hot breakfast with juice & coffee

Meals are prepared and served by our Kitchen staff and volunteer groups. Don't worry about having to return to UMD for lunch during the week. Pick up your bagged lunch on your way out the door in the morning.  Choose your sandwich and sides from a selection of fruits vegetables, and snacks to fuel you throughout your day.

Dinner is provided by your community. Volunteer groups prepare a unique menu of main courses and sides for you to choose from.

Our Impact

UMD's Community Café offers three free meals per day, 365 days per year, to anyone who is hungry. We serve nearly 250,000 meals annually. About half those meals go to guests staying in the UMD Community Shelter on our campus. The other half feed unsheltered homeless and extremely low-resource neighbors in Durham.

Bagged lunches are perfect for adults & kids alike
Bagged lunches during the week enable our neighbors to work, look for work, or keep appointments without having to visit UMD
The Community Café serves as a central location for the homeless community to get connected with vital resources for their everyday needs
Patrons can grab a book from the library, attend a free health screening or workshop, and sign up for a morning shower
